Having styled celebs like Sonam Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Asin, Nargis Fakhri and most recently Anushka Sharma, Tanya Ghavri is definitely the most sought after stylist in Bollywood today. She started her Bollywood career by assisting Pernia Qureshi as a Stylist on the Sonam Kapoor starrer ‘Aisha’ and then ‘Thankyou’.
We caught up with the lovely Tanya and she was kind enough to answer a few questions for us. Read on!
Question 1: Tanya you’ve styled a lot of celebs. What’s your personal style like?
Answer 1: Yes, I have styled a bunch of celebrities, not a lot yet. My personal style, I would say, is more tilted towards androgynous, but I’m a shorts girl.
Question 2: You always wanted to work as a stylist or in fashion? Or it just happened by chance?
Answer 2: I didn’t always know that this is what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a lot of things, so in one way it just happened. I think I fell in love with fashion when I went to New York to study.
Question 3: What are the things that you keep in mind while creating a look for a celebrity?
Answer 3: When I style a celebrity, I keep in mind their body type, their mood at that point in time (it changes a lot of things) and very recently, how I can work around the accessories (bag, shoes and jewellery), very very important.
Question 4: Sonam and Rhea have great fashion sensibilities. How is it working with them? Do you guys at times, have your little creative arguments?
Answer 4: Yes, Sonam and Rhea have outstanding sensibilities, with not just fashion but also films, food everything. Rhea can tell you the best restaurants in town. They together have an amazing aesthetic. All creative people have arguments and I think it’s healthy because it keeps us all thinking.
Question 5: Not so long ago, Asin was on every worst dressed list. Her recent appearances have been fabulous because of you. How did you manage to do so?
Answer 5: Asin is quite an amazing girl and she’s gorgeous. It’s really not so difficult to make her look good. She has lost lots of weight and has started enjoying her clothes and looks more. I guess that’s what’s making the difference. I think it’s all about how you feel in what you wear. We just hit it off and she listens and is very open to opinions and very trusting of my sensibilities. So it has worked out for the best.
Question 6: The concept of hiring a stylist is relatively new in Bollywood. A lot of people are still not aware of it. You think it’s changing?
Answer 6: Yes, absolutely! The concept of stylist is changing and it will only get better with time. There is so much buzz about stylists now. I think there is a lot of talent out there with people who aspire to be stylists. I think, if true to your work, hard working and constantly up your work, a stylist has a lot of potential in this country now.
Question 7: You assisted Pernia Qureshi as the stylist on the film Aisha and Thankyou. Any future Bollywood projects?
Answer 7: Yes, I did assist Pernia. I’ve learnt everything from her. I mean Aisha says it all. She’s one of the most talented people we have in this country. We had a great team. And ofcourse, I wish to do Bollywood films, but it has to be something that will be really interesting and would challenge me every day. But I have not been offered anything like that. I’ll definitely do it if it comes to me.
Question 8: One of our readers seeks a little Fashion advice from you. Hasara from Sri Lanka wants to know what shades of color she should opt for, considering she has a darker skin tone.
Answer 8: Say Hi to Hasara! I love darker skin tones. It brings out all the colors beautifully and you never really look washed out like a fair skinned person. I think Hasara should wear hues of different colors like within blue go for royal and turquoise, coral and rust orange. White is always amazing on dark skin. She should embrace her skin tone and once she does that, she’ll be able to carry off almost all the colors fabulously.
Question 9: Any Style tips for our readers?
Answer 9: Nude shoes are a must have. Wear the little black dress but with a twist. This season do neons and enjoy it. Have fun with your clothes.
Question 10: A few Rapid fire questions:
a. Your favourite Indian designer: Anamika Khanna
b. Your favourite International designer: Alexander McQueen
c. One common mistake that girls make while dressing up, which makes you cringe: Bubble skirts. Every girl needs to throw them out of their wardrobe asap!
d. Best dressed male in Bollywood: Saif Ali Khan
e. Best dressed female in Bollywood: Sonam Kapoor

I didn’t know Tanya was the one who styled Asin. I mean, that was the biggest transformation in history! Clearly she is really talented and I hope she gets involved in Bollywood to a greater degree. Does she only style women or does she also style men? I feel she should get in touch with some of Bollywood’s actors, like Shahrukh. He looks divine on screen but off screen he really needs better clothes and a proper hairstyle!
